Where do I belong?

Literacy

Our key text in literacy this half-term is Big, Bad Owl by Steve Smallman. We will use the text to write character descriptions, focusing on using adjectives to describe nouns, and describe the setting of Cupcake Wood. Using our knowledge of the main character, Scowl, we will make videos, speaking in role. Our final written outcome is to retell the story, which we will publish into books to take home.

We are enjoying reading more of Steve Smallman's books in story time. We think he is a very funny author! Here is a link to his website:

We will also write information texts for people visiting Nelson. We will include different non-fiction features in our writing and publish them by making videos.

We were kindly invited to visit Nelson Library and spend some time finding out about all the different things they offer. Benni from the library shared a story with us, and we completed a scavenger hunt to find different characters. We found out that we can borrow 20 books at a time, and it is free to sign up. Thanks to all the staff at the library for having us!

Maths

In maths, we learnt about place value, addition and subtraction, measuring length and mass, and shape. We worked practically and pictorially to practise our skills and solved calculations and problems using efficient methods.

Science

In Science, we are investigating health and growth in humans – discussing how humans change as they grow. We will compare our bodies, measuring the size of our hands, to see if the oldest people have the largest.

To investigate the spread of germs, we are carrying out an experiment involving touching bread with clean and unclean hands.

We are also investigating and describing what happens to our bodies when we exercise and learning about the importance of healthy eating.

Art

We are studying two artists this half-term - L.S. Lowry and Paul Horton. We will observe their work, and compare their styles and look at the different colours they use in their pictures. We will look closely at the buildings in their pictures and replicate the lines and shapes they use. We will practise mixing and blending the colours of the two artists in our own artwork. Finally, we will create our own artwork, inspired by Lowry and Horton. In addition, we will create digital art.

Music

Mrs Brunton is working with us to teach us a new song, 'Hands, Feet, Heart.' It is an Afro-Pop song. We are practising call and response and have put actions to the lyrics. We are learning to perform the song with instruments.

We are also joining in with singing assemblies, learning the songs 'Sunshine' and 'We Run the Show.'

Geography

We are exploring our local area to find human and physical features. We have looked at the different buildings that we walk past regularly but never have the chance to study carefully. We are studying where we live and have talked about the human and physical features in Nelson, using aerial photos and online maps. We will create our own maps to show the human and physical features in our area.

PE

Our topic in PE this half-term is Orienteering. We are learning about the basic points on a compass, how to read a map using the ‘key,’ how to orientate a map and how we should ‘thumb’ a map as we travel. We will practise following different routes on a range of maps to find different marker posts.
