Our Curriculum Intent- Phonics

At Whitefield school we embed phonics learning by teaching high quality, stimulating and active sessions in a systematic way following  Red Rose Letters and Sounds. All children develop a secure understanding of letters and sounds, enabling them to read with fluency and apply knowledge and skills to spell accurately within their writing across the curriculum.

Decodable reading books: matched to letter sets being taught, using a range of decodable publishers.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

In Year 1 all children take the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check in June. There is some information below regarding the phonics screening check. If your child is in Year 1, more information will be shared about this in May.
