Looking after Nelson

This half term we will be considering the impact of human actions on the world around us - with a particular focus on litter and how we can help to keep Nelson tidy.

Our core texts this half term are 'What a waste' by Jess French and '10 things I can do to help my world' by Melanie Walsh.

We have been learning about the life and work of David Attenborough and why he is important. We found out that he is a famous broadcaster and naturalist who has spent many years exploring the natural world and sharing it with people through wildlife programmes such as Planet Earth and Blue Planet. We learned how his documentaries show animals and habitats from around the world and help people understand how amazing nature is. We also talked about how he encourages everyone to look after our planet and protect wildlife for the future.

In Geography this week we worked in groups to look at aerial maps of Nelson, Lancashire, including the area around our school. We explored the map to identify different human features such as streets, buildings, and local landmarks. We talked about what we could recognise and how maps help us understand the places around us. After that, we made predictions about where we thought there might be the most litter and discussed our reasons, thinking about places where lots of people visit or travel through. This helped us understand our local area and think about how we can help take care of our environment.

We went on a litter picking walk around our local area. We talked about why it is important to keep our environment clean and safe.

We worked together to spot and pick up litter like wrappers and bottles. We were careful and helped each other.

We felt proud that we made our area cleaner and learned how we can look after our environment.

In D.T we built and explored a variety of freestanding structures using a range of construction kits. We learnt about how to stop structures falling over and ways we can make them stronger so that they can hold weight.

We then looked at differently shaped boxes and investigated how to securely attach the boxes together in preparation for making our mosque from recycled materials.
