Flight (Summer 1)

English

Our core text this half-term is The Darkest Dark, by astronaut, Chris Hadfield.

We will use the text to write character descriptions, persuasive setting descriptions, and we will write our own innovated versions of the story.

Maths

This half-term, we will cover place value, addition and subtraction, position and direction, multiplication and division, and time.

To show our place value knowledge, we will partition numbers in different ways, compare numbers using <, > and = signs, and represent numbers on number lines. We will apply our knowledge of the four operations to solve problems in real-life contexts. We will use our understanding of fractions and time to help us understand 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 turns, clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Science

Our topic this half-term is plants.

We will begin the unit by recapping what we learnt in Year 1, showing what we already know about plants.

We will plant seeds and are observe how they grow and change over time, testing how plants grow depending on variable conditions.

We will learn more about the different parts of plants and their functions.

Design Technology
This half term, we are investigating wheels and axles, and designing and making a moon buggy. We will explore existing products by investigating toy vehicles and learn about their different parts. We will then investigate the different ways of joining wheels, axle-holders and axles to a chassis, before designing our own moon buggies. After constructing our vehicles, we will evaluate them against the design criteria.

R.E

In R.E this half term, we will study Christianity and how the Christian community is united. We will look at symbols used to reflect beliefs and values, and how churches and cathedrals are designed. We will explore how the different parts of a church are used during worship, and design and built our own church models.
We will look at the different communities that we belong to and discuss why they matter to us.
