Where do I Belong? (Autumn 1)

Literacy

Our key text in literacy this half-term was Big, Bad Owl by Steve Smallman. We used the text to write character descriptions, focusing on using adjectives to describe nouns, and described the setting of Cupcake Wood. Using our knowledge of the main character, Scowl, we made videos, speaking in role. Scan the QR codes below to watch the videos. Our final written outcome was to retell the story, which we published into books to take home.

We enjoyed reading more of Steve Smallman's books in story time. We think he is a very funny author! Here is a link to his website:

We also wrote information texts for people visiting Nelson. We included different non-fiction features in our writing and published them by making videos.

We were kindly invited to visit Nelson Library and spend some time finding out about all the different things they offer. Kirsty from the library shared some stories with us and we completed a scavenger hunt to find different characters. We found out that we can borrow 20 books at a time and it is free to sign up. Thanks to all the staff at the library for having us!

Maths

In maths, we learnt about place value, addition and subtraction, measuring length and mass, and shape. We worked practically and pictorially to practise our skills and solved calculations and problems using efficient methods.

Science

In Science, we investigated health and growth in humans - discussing how humans change as they grow. We compared our bodies, measuring the size of our hands, and found that the oldest people do not always have the largest, and are not always the tallest!

To investigate the spread of germs, we carried out an experiment involving touching bread with clean and unclean hands.

We also investigated and described what happens to our bodies when we exercise and learnt about the importance of healthy eating.

Art

We studied two artists this half-term - L.S. Lowry and Paul Horton. We observed their work, compared their styles and looked at the different colours they used in their pictures. We looked closely at the buildings in their pictures and replicated the lines and shapes they used. We practised mixing and blending the colours of the two artists in our own artwork. Finally, we created our own artwork, inspired by Lowry and Horton. In addition, we created digital art. Scan the QR codes below to see some of our creations!

Music

Mrs Brunton worked with us to teach us a new song, 'Hands, Feet, Heart.' It is an Afro-Pop song. We practised call and response and put actions to the lyrics. We learned to perform the song with instruments.

We also joined in with our singing assemblies, learning the songs 'Sunshine' and 'We Run the Show.'

Geography

We explored our local area to find human and physical features, recording the things we found along our route. We looked closely at the buildings that we walk past regularly but never have the chance to study carefully. We studied where we live and talked about the human and physical features in Nelson, using aerial photos and online maps. We created our own maps to show the human and physical features in our area.

PE

Our topic in PE this half-term was Orienteering. We learnt about the basic points on a compass, how to read a map using the ‘key,’ how to orientate a map and how we should ‘thumb’ a map as we travel. We practised following different routes on a range of maps to find different marker posts.
