Our core texts this half term are 'What a waste' by Jess French and '10 things I can do to help my world' by Melanie Walsh.
This half term we will be considering the impact of human actions on the world around us - with a particular focus on litter and how we can help to keep Nelson tidy.
In History we have been learning about David Attenborough’s life and achievements. Particularly focusing on his efforts to protect our planet and the impact of climate change.
We had a visit from our local scientist Steven Lewis Neill. We looked for signs of spring in our Forest school. Then we went on a minibeast hunt to look for new signs of life. We even found some snails eggs. After that we collected some natural materials from the Forest school to create a habitat for some of the minibeasts.
As part of our geography learning we are learning about the impact of litter on our local area. Today we looked at aerial maps of Nelson and identified the human features we could see around our school. We then discussed and predicted which areas of Nelson would have the most litter.
In Design Technology we are learning about the inspirational life and achievements of architect Zaha Hadid in preparation for our project of designing and making a model of a new mosque for Nelson using recycled materials. We explored local buildings and structures around our local area and looked closely at how the bricks are placed. We discussed the key features of a good structure.
We went on a local walk to see the structure of the Ghausia Mosque in Nelson. We talked about the brickwork and how it is a safe and secure structure.
We conducted a fieldwork study to find where the most litter was in Nelson. We found the most litter near Morrisons and the Mosque. Followed by Victoria Street next to the canal.
