What would it be like to be an explorer?

This half term, we will be reading the text The Great Explorer written by author Chris Judge. We will be following the main character Tom on his adventure to find his dad in the North Pole.

 

 

Science

 

This half term, we will be learning about everyday objects and the materials they are made from.

 

 

We began our learning by going on a material hunt around our classroom.

 

What objects did you find that were made out of wood?

We were visited by scientist Steven Lewis Neille who helped us to lead an investigation to find out about seasonal changes. We created sycamore seed helicopters using paper and tested them to see which fell to the ground the slowest.

 

What were some of the changes you made to yours to help it’s success?

 

We carried out an investigation to find out which material is the most absorbent and waterproof.

Design Technology

 

This half term, our design criteria is to create a suitable bag for our explorer Tom to carry his survival items.
 

We began by investigating different joining techniques, including, sewing, stapling and glueing.

We then investigated different finishing techniques, including, a drawstring, a button and velcro.

We made our bags based on our design, using the joining and finishing technique we selected.

Geography

 

This half term, we will be learning about the wider world and how it can be explored.

 

 

We began by locating and naming the different continents around the world.

We learnt about the different continents and discussed their famous landmarks/facts.

 

History

 

This half term, we are learning about significant explorers from the past.

 

We began by looking at a picture of some explorers and used our detective skills to spot clues. We then asked questions about what we wanted to find out.

 

Outdoor Elements

 

We visited Outdoor Elements and were explorers for the day. We carried out survival tasks, including, den making, baking bread on the fire and problem solving.

 

We had a fantastic time and tried lots of new things!

 

Mr Bashir

 

We were visited by a real life explorer called Mr Bashir. We found out all about his journey up the K2 mountain in Pakistan. We were fascinated by stories he told and were even lucky enough to be able have a closer look at some of the items he took with him.

Building Bridges

 

This half term, we have been getting to know our friends from Sacred Heart Primary School.

 

We recently visited the Leisure Box and participated in some fun sports activities together.
