Did it really happen?

English

Our topic this half term is The Great Fire of London. As an introduction to the topic we built a campfire in the forest school. We observed it closely which generated descriptive language. This vocabulary will be used to write poems and will help us think about what it must have been like in 1666 when the fire happened. We will be writing non-fiction reports about the Great Fire of London and will use our learning from our History lessons to support this.

Science

In Science we are continuing with our learning about living things and their habitats. we began by learning about the offspring that animals have and how they change and grow over time. We learnt about different habitats and which animals live in them. We also thought about how different animals are suited to the habitats that they live in. We explored micro-habitats around our school and recorded the living things we found. We enjoyed a visit from Steven Lewis Neville and we made a micro-habitat for a minibeast.

Art

As part of our Fire of London topic, we looked at paintings from the past and closely observed the colours we found. We then sketched some flames through observation and thought carefully about our use of line. Then we used recyclable materials to create 3D sculptures of flames and added colour using paint.

History

In history our topic is the Great Fire of London. We looked at different sources of evidence about the Great Fire and considered the information they gave us. We wrote reports all about the events of the Great Fire and also sequences the events on a timeline. We compared how fire-fighting has changed over time and also compared the Great Fire of London to Nelson’s most significant fire at the Imperial Ballroom in 1976.

R.E

Our topic this half term in R.E is Islam. We thought about different routines that Muslims have both at home and in school and the rules they follow. We learnt about the declaration of Shahada and the 5 pillars of Islam and we explored how people show commitment and obedience in their lives and show respect to others. We thought about how Muslims pray and how this shows their obedience and commitment to God. We reflected about what really matters and how important it is to make time for people and things that matter in life.

We enjoyed a visit from the local Imam to tell us all about Ramadan and why it is a special time for Muslims and we had a Ramadan craft afternoon with our families.

Geography

In Geography we have learnt about the characteristics of the United Kingdom countries and their capital cities. We used atlas, digital maps and videos to develop our knowledge of the four countries and their capitals. We learnt about their famous landmarks and their human and physical features.

Visit from the Fire Service.

We had a visit from some firefighters to tell us all about the job they do. We spoke about the different pieces of equipment they use and the different clothing they wear. They spoke about the dangers of fire and we learnt about the ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ rule. They also told us how we can keep safe at home from fire and the importance of smoke alarms. We learnt about what to do if there was a fire at home, the importance of having a fire plan and how to call 999.

A visit from the Lego Man

We enjoyed a visit from the lego man linked to our learning about London. We created famous London landmarks using lego. We showed lots of teamwork, communication skills and determination.
