It's Up to Us! - Summer 2

Our whole school summer project is called 'It's Up to Us!' which aims to develop our understanding of environmental issues affecting our planet. Class 1 will focus on 'deforestation' and how chopping down trees is affecting animal habitats. We plan to look closely at animals who are losing their habitats in the rainforest. Our core texts this half-term are:

Phonics

In Phonics we will be consolidating our learning of phase 3 phonemes and will be focusing more on applying these in our writing:

ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

We will also begin our phase 4 phonics learning. In phase 4 phonics we do not learn any new phonemes but develop our skills in blending and segmenting words with 4, 5 or 6 sounds often using our phase 3 knowledge too

e.g. t/r/ee/s         s/t/air/s,           m/u/n/ch/i/ng.

Please help your child consolidate this learning at home by reading the words in your red phonics Book.

Thank you :)

Exploring Trees

This week as part of our topic learning we began by discussing why people are cutting down trees. We visited forest school to look more closely at trees and described and labelled each part...trunk, branches, leaves, roots, bark. We then explored each part through our art work. We enjoyed experimenting mixing and painting different shades of greens to create leaves. We looked closely at their shapes and lines to draw our own. We created a huge tree by scrunching lots of brown paper and enjoyed exploring the texture of real bark to decorate the trunk. We explored different painting tools and loved sponge painting on a large scale to create a big tree canopy!

A Visit to Thornton Hall Farm

This week as part of our topic learning we visited Thornton Hall Farm. We got to see and feed many different animals. We talked about how to look farm animals and what we use them for in our daily lives.  We met deer, cows, llamas, alpacas, goat, sheep, pigs, horses, cows, rabbits and guinea pigs. We had so much fun playing on the park, in the soft play area and on the jumping pillows too!
