Grand Designs

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

We hope that you have all had a happy and restful break.

This half term our topic is 'Grand Designs', where we will be looking closely at buildings, construction and architecture around our local area and beyond.

We have started our new topic by looking at our school logo and discussing why we have a picture of the Whitefield Bridge. Over the coming weeks we will be finding out more about the Whitefield Bridge's construction and history and how we use it today to take us from home to school.

Our core text for Spring 1 is 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'.

As part of our topic we had a Lego community builders' workshop. We built our own houses and then worked collaboratively to create a town. We had to think carefully about how we placed the bricks to make sure our buildings were strong and secure and didn't fall down.

In Art we are looking at Van Gogh’s The Langlois Bridge at Arles.

We started by looking at the painting and discussing what we could see. We noticed the lady on the bridge and talked about who she might be and where she might be going. We talked about how Van Gogh had added texture to his artwork using colour and paint. We used different media to practise creating texture for the water, bridge and grass.

After reading our core text. We used construction materials to build our own bridges for the Three Billy Goats Gruff.

In art we have explored texture using different media and used the skills we have developed to create a piece of artwork inspired by Vincent Van Gogh.

We LOVE reading in class 4 so we went on a walk to our local library. We learnt about how we can access books and borrow up to 20 books at a time home! We enjoyed exploring the library, sharing stories and talking about our favourite authors.

In science we became engineers and tested the strength of different bridge shapes. We tested an arch bridge, a beam bridge and a concertina bridge. We recorded our data and discussed the strongest and weakest bridge.

In science we have been learning about materials and their properties. We took part in practical investigations to describe the properties of materials to our friends.

We enjoyed welcoming our parents in for a maths workshop. We enjoyed sharing you how we teach maths in a practical way.
