Exploring Winter

In our topic learning this week we have been exploring Winter. We were very lucky to experience real snow and ice at the start of our new term as our first day back was a very snowy day! We did lots of exploring in our outdoor classroom and it was a great way to activate our prior knowledge of the season! Inside we have been exploring Winter through experimenting with different art techniques such as colour mixing, creating ice cube paint brushes, drawing Jack Frost and painting snowflakes!

Our First Visit to Forest School

This week was our first visit to Forest School. We had so much fun exploring the great outdoors! We enjoyed exploring all the different areas with our friends: the swings, the river, the story telling den, the willow tunnels and the mud kitchen. We carried out lots of focused activities too, such as creating hibernating hedgehogs using sticks that we found at forest school, bird feeders by threading 'cheerios' onto pipe cleaners and we explored lots of ice in our investigation tray! We can not wait to go again next week!

Making Bird Feeders

In our topic learning we have been talking about how we keep ourselves warm in winter but also how animals that live outdoors might keep warm. We read a lovely story called ‘Penguin’s Big Adventure’ and discussed what characteristics the penguin and the polar bear in the story have to keep themselves warm; e.g. thick fur, layers of fat etc. This led onto discussing how birds keep warm in winter and where they might get their food from as the trees in winter are bare and the ground may be frozen. The children wanted to make more bird feeders to hang up in our forest school and we plan to watch what birds enjoy eating them when we visit forest school this week.
