Our key text that we will be studying this half term is, Big Bad Owl, by Steve Smallman. We will be learning about the different characters in the story and how they behave. We will be comparing the characters and thinking about times when we feel happy, grumpy, afraid or sad.
In English we started the term by talking about ourselves using the text 'You Choose'. We spoke about our likes, dislikes and the different activities we like to do. We thought about what jobs we might like to do when we are older and what kinds of food we like to eat.
In maths we began by focusing on place value. We used different equipment to represent a two digit number.
In music we will be working with Mrs Brunson to learn the pop song ‘Hands, feet and heart’. This is a pop song from South Africa. We began by finding the pulse of the music and using our bodies and claves to tap out a rhythm. We also practised using call and response in a song.
In art we will be looking at the work of Paul Horton and L.S Lowry. We began by looking at the two artists work and saying which we preferred and why. Then we looked at the colours that the two artists used in their work and spoke about the differences.
In P.E we started orienteering. We worked as a team and followed instructions on a map. We used a key to help us create different faces using equipment.
We went on a local walk as part of our geography topic. We looked at human and physical features of the local area as well as some of the street names.
In art we sketched local buildings and landmarks that we have in Nelson. We thought about how we used line and shading to create detail on our artwork.
We visited our local library. We found out all about what the library can offer and took part in a treasure hunt to find different characters. We enjoyed listening to some stories and had a chance to explore the library and have a tour.
We added colour to our sketches in the style of Paul Horton. We thought carefully about which types of colours to use.
We also added colour to our sketches in the style of L.S Lowry and we compared the two different artists.
We had a visit from Mr Steve to heal us with our science learning. We used our forest school and thought about what humans and animals need to survive. We foraged for food like a squirrel and then built a home for a mouse. We had to make sure that we included a shelter, some food and a place to sleep.
In science we tasted different foods and identified which food group they come from. We thought about which food are healthy and which are unhealthy. We used the Eatwell plate to decide if we had a healthy lunch and a balanced diet.
In science we learnt about how to have good hygiene and the importance of hand washing. Look at the results of our bread investigation! This shows how important it is to wash our hands properly so we don’t spread germs.
In English we looked at the features of non-fiction texts. We explored a range of books and identified all of the different features in them. This will help us to write out own reports about Nelson.
We worked together to build Nelson! We all chose a different landmark or building to build and then put all of our creations together. As we built we collected lots of vocabulary that we might need to write our reports about Nelson.
