Brave on the Waves

Every Hat Tells a Story

This half term we will be working on the whole school project 'Every Hat Tells a Story'. Mrs Bates and Mrs Ahmed Akhtar choose a  sailors hat! We brainstormed ideas as a class and all agreed that the hat reminds us of a sailor and someone at sea! This will inspire our learning this half term and we will be using the story The Storm Whale by Benji Davies as our core text.

In Art, we began by sketching observational drawings of lighthouses before moving on to collage work. We will explore different ways of travelling on water and create a variety of boats using clay and cardboard. As part of our learning, we will study barges and the decorative art often found on them. Finally, we will design and create our own barge-inspired artwork.

In History, we will learn about Grace Darling and why she is considered a significant person. We will explore her life and the brave rescue she carried out to save people during a dangerous storm. We will also think about what makes someone important in history and how people like Grace Darling are remembered.

This learning will link to our English work, where we will use her story to inspire our own writing.
