Flight (Summer 1)

English

Our core text this half-term was The Darkest Dark, by astronaut, Chris Hadfield.

We used the text to write character and setting descriptions. We also looked at the first Moon Landing, researching the Apollo 11 mission, and writing a recount of the events.

Maths

This half-term, we covered place value, addition and subtraction, position and direction, multiplication and division, and time.

To show our place value knowledge, we partitioned numbers in different ways, compared numbers using <, > and = signs, and represented numbers on number lines. We applied our knowledge of the four operations to solve problems in real-life contexts. We used our understanding of fractions and time to help us understand 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 turns, clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Science

Our topic this half-term was plants.

We began the unit by recapping what we learnt in Year 1, showing what we already knew about plants.

We planted seeds and observed how they grew and changed over time, testing how plants grow depending on variable conditions.

We learnt more about the different parts of plants and their functions.

Design Technology
This half term, we investigated wheels and axles, and designed and made a moon buggy. We explored existing products by investigating toy vehicles and learnt about their different parts. We then investigated the different ways of joining wheels, axle-holders and axles to a chassis, before designing our own moon buggies. After constructing our vehicles, we evaluated them against the design criteria.

R.E

In R.E this half term, we studied Christianity and how the Christian community is united. We looked at symbols used to reflect beliefs and values, and how churches and cathedrals are designed. We explored how the different parts of a church are used during worship, and designed and built our own church models.
We looked at the different communities that we belong to and discussed why they matter to us.

PE

This half-term’s focus in PE was athletics and fundamental movements. We developed our skills in agility, balance and coordination. We are very grateful to the students at Nelson & Colne College who helped us with our PE this half-term.
